A Short Overview For We Are Waking The Sleeping Giant

There are twelve ancient Giants sleeping throughout the world. One of them is in Liverpool and it’s dreaming as it sleeps. It’s dreaming a dream of waking up, and everyone coming to the Liverpool Biennial is part of the Giant’s dreaming. It’s calling to us to help it awake, and the very fact that you’re reading this and I’m writing it down just goes to show that the time of the awakening is drawing near - October 22, 2006. Came to me as part of a dream and now it comes to you.

The first thing to do in October is to send out scouts throughout Liverpool to try to see where the Giant might be. And all the scouts will send back dispatches to our Headquarters describing the what and the where of the Giant. Then mapmakers there will make their maps and draw what the scouts have seen so it all can be shared with everyone else in the city. This might not be easy because, initially, the Giant will be hard to see - partly because it has more than the usual three-way dimensions, but also because we just don’t like to look. And you never know, it may turn out that the sleeping Giant isn’t exactly human in form. But it is a Giant even so, a completely whole being just like us with a heart and a voice and a mind of it’s own.

And eventually we’ll come to agree just where the Giant’s chakras might be. And when we do we’ll start in it’s Heart, we’ll open up the entrance ways to let people in and the energy out. We’ll work every day in various ways throughout the Giant’s sleeping self. We’ll have to make up some curious stuff to get things ready for the final call when we all try to wake the Giant up. Just what we’ll need then is hard to say now, but surely some new and intriguing machines will be bound to arrive on the scene. We could probably use a special transformer to step down the high level amplitude of the Giant’s heart energy, and a generator to beam it all out throughout Liverpool. Dream-flags will be useful too when we follow the Giant’s breath, and also a wagon to collect whatever materials and immaterials people may want to offer up to help with the Giant’s awakening.

But getting right down to the nib of the nub, this is the rub and the rubber band too: what the Giant needs most to finally awake is people. You and me, we and you, we’ll have to be the active elements that make the Giant’s awakening occur. In an effort to make it easier for people who want to join in, we’re compiling a list of vacancies we hope to see fulfilled. And people like you can hire themselves to fulfill one if they want - or maybe you have your own vacancy you’d like to have fulfilled.

Listen: the Giant really needs your help. So do we. We are waking the sleeping Giant in Liverpool - October, 2006. Why not come and join us there? For the Giant to even begin to awake it will need better food - not to mention our love and sincere communication. So dancers will have to dance for the Giant, performers must perform - not for any audience that might occur, but just for the Giant.

Now I don’t want to get your hopes too high, it’s hard to say how the whole thing will go. But if the Giant doesn’t wake up, that’s okay, we’ll all just come back again and try it once more in 2008.
